ChatGPT can recommend your business, but only if it can find your website, and even then not every time someone asks. To show up in ChatGPT search answers, your site has to be open to OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Beyond that, OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. Independent tests also show the list of recommended brands changes almost every time the same question is asked. So the useful answer is a share: in how many answers does your business appear? Below is how to check it, track it and raise it.

Does ChatGPT recommend my business? What happens behind the answer

When a question needs current information, ChatGPT may search the web on its own. According to OpenAI’s guide to searching the web with ChatGPT, it typically rewrites the user’s question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to search providers. Microsoft is among those it names. It also estimates the user’s location from their IP address. A search for “good restaurants near me” in the San Francisco area may become “top restaurants San Francisco”.

The same page says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors meant to surface relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. It also admits that results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. OpenAI does not publish how a service or local business gets picked over another.

Paying does not change this. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on February 9, 2026. Its help page on ads states that ads run on separate systems and advertisers cannot shape, rank or change responses. An ad is a labelled placement next to the answer. It does not put you inside the recommendation.

Step 1: Make sure OAI-SearchBot can reach your site

This is the one requirement OpenAI spells out. Its overview of OpenAI crawlers says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Each crawler is controlled separately in robots.txt, so you can stay visible in search while keeping your content out of model training.

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for a rule that disallows OAI-SearchBot, or a blanket rule that blocks all bots. Then check the layer above it. OpenAI asks that your host or CDN allow traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses. A firewall or bot-protection setting can block a crawler that robots.txt allows, so ask whoever manages your hosting to confirm.

Step 2: Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask

Typing your company name proves little. Customers ask for a type of business, a problem or a place. Write 10 to 20 prompts in their words, such as “accountant for freelancers in Lisbon” or “who builds Webflow websites for startups”. Run each one several times: signed out, on another account, on mobile. Location and saved memories can change how ChatGPT rewrites the search, so one run from your own account tells you very little.

The answers will move. In a SparkToro study, 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google’s AI a combined 2,961 times in November and December 2025. The researchers found less than a 1 in 100 chance that any two responses gave the same list of brands. For the same list in the same order, it was about 1 in 1,000. Lists ran from two or three names to ten or more.

The study’s conclusion is practical: measure how often you appear across many prompts and runs, and ignore “ranking position”. In ChatGPT, one Los Angeles hospital appeared in 69 of 71 answers but was the top mention in only 25. The author discloses that a co-researcher works at an AI tracking startup and that the study is not peer-reviewed, so treat the numbers as directional.

Service businesses should expect lower numbers than product brands. In a B2B test asking for brand design agencies for a coffee shop, top names reached visibility in the 30 to 40 percent range, against 90 to 100 percent for leading headphone brands. More possible answers means each business gets named less often.

Log the results in a simple sheet: prompt, date, whether you were named, and which competitors were named. Repeat it every month.

Step 3: Track ChatGPT visits in your analytics

Recommendations that send people to your site leave a trace. OpenAI’s FAQ for publishers says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links. Sites that allow OAI-SearchBot can see this traffic in tools like Google Analytics. Filter by that source and watch the monthly trend next to your prompt log.

This only counts clicks. Someone who reads your name in an answer and calls you later won’t appear as a ChatGPT visit. A “How did you hear about us?” field on your contact form fills part of that gap.

Step 4: Give ChatGPT something worth citing

OpenAI names no specific ranking factors for services, so be wary of anyone promising a guaranteed spot. What you can do is make your site the clearest answer to the questions in your prompt log. In practice that means:

  • A page for each service that says plainly what you do, who it is for and where you work.
  • Answers to the questions customers ask before buying, in their wording, on the page itself.
  • Facts that are easy to quote, like price ranges, timelines and locations, plus the same business name and contact details everywhere you’re listed.
  • Current information. The SparkToro researchers saw AI tools recommend businesses that no longer exist, so an outdated page can work against you.

GEO, or generative engine optimisation, means shaping your site so AI engines can find and quote it. Because ChatGPT search draws on outside search providers, GEO overlaps heavily with good SEO. Building for both from the start is the approach we set out in our guide to SEO, GEO and AEO strategy.

We see a website as a growth system your team runs every week, not a launch you forget. For ChatGPT visibility that is literal: the prompt log and the chatgpt.com referral line show each month whether your changes work. Our SEO & GEO service sets up both, and the scope is listed on our pricing page.

What you can’t control

Part of the answer depends on the person asking. ChatGPT uses their location, may use saved memories to rewrite the search, and on mobile may show a map. Two customers in the same city can get different lists. Ads won’t change the answer, and OpenAI offers no way to request inclusion beyond letting its crawler in.

So set a realistic target. You won’t be named in every answer. A rising share of prompts that mention you, plus a growing chatgpt.com line in analytics, means ChatGPT is recommending your business more often. Run your first ten prompts this week and you’ll have a baseline to measure against.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, in a limited way. OpenAI says that if it finds the URL of a disallowed page through a third-party search provider or other pages, it may show just the link and page title in ChatGPT Atlas. To prevent that, use a noindex meta tag, and keep the page crawlable so the crawler can read the tag.
